What a conference!

What a conference!

What a huge few days it has been at the 2018 NESA Conference in sunny Brisbane! With so much laughter, prizes and, of course, networking jam packed into those 2 days, we’re all surprised to see Maria, Bec and Matt so energetic!

First of all, we want to say a massive congratulations to our prize winners! Coming in first place is Rose Scown from Centacare Employment who walked away with a brand new Apple iWatch, and in second place is Kerrie Cooke from Australian Employment Training Solutions, with the prize of a delicious bottle of Strathmuir Shiraz. Well done and we hope you enjoy!

Secondly, we want to thank everyone who came to chat to the Bounce team at the booth. What a great group of people you are! With all the conversations, laughs and of course, cocktails… well, let’s just say Kelly is incredibly jealous that she couldn’t be there.

Finally, we’d like to thank NESA for once again putting on such a great event and bringing everyone together to not only have a great time but also giving us the opportunity to learn new things and get industry updates from the people who are in the thick of it.

Remember, just because the conference is over for another year doesn’t mean that we can’t keep in touch! If you’re interested in the services that Bounce provides or just want to say hi, give us a call and have a chat, we’d love to hear from you!

Imagine the possibilities #SeriouslyClever

Your employees are the heart of your business. Whether they take care of your customers, create your products or write your reports, your employees are the foundation that makes the business what it is. Investing in their professional development is one of the most important decisions you can make as a leader.

We show you how to move your business from good to great with stellar leadership, confident customer engagement, insightful communication and positive workplace cultures. Click here to know more!

Action takers, how to go bold and be brilliant

We live in a time where employees are no longer numbers on a clipboard, they’re needed and appreciated, and having employees that are happy, productive and excel in their work is more vital than ever before. A massive piece of this is corporate culture, and some of the largest and most successful companies have turned this into a fine art.

For example, Netflix evaluates their employees by the abilities and accomplishments rather than the number of hours worked, creating a culture of self-starters and accountability. DreamWorks holds events and parties that encourage employees to showcase their personal work and projects to boost confidence and appreciation. Companies like Adobe, Google, Facebook, and Amazon build their incredible work cultures by investing in their employee’s professional development.

You may not be able to hold large parties or have the luxury of changing the entire business model, but you can give your team the skills they need to go from good to great. Maybe upskilling your team hasn’t crossed your mind yet and that’s okay, but remember a business or company name alone is not what makes it successful, it’s the people behind the scenes that work hard every day, yourself included, that make it happen. This is where innovation begins, and success stems from. This is how you go bold and be brilliant – together!

Another incredible trip!

Another incredible trip!

It’s been a little while since we’ve given you a Bounce USA Update but the wait is over! Three weeks ago, Maria and Nettie embarked on the 21-hour journey to Boston, Massachusetts, to visit one of the Bounce Programs and catch up with the Bounce USA trainers – as well as escape the freezing Victorian winter of course. Being Nettie’s first time meeting the trainers and everyone that works at Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board (where the Bounce Program is currently being licenced), she was overrun with incredible stories, hugs and screams of excitement – literally!

While the girls managed to slot in a quick trip to Salem to learn about witches, the short five-day visit mostly consisted of drop-ins, meetings and planning for future growth (and boy is there about to be some growth!).

Maria and Nettie got to drop in on day one of a Bounce Program, where Maria told her story and chatted with the participants about what they want to get out of the program. It was an incredible experience and an amazing group of people.

Thank you to everyone that made our trip such an incredible experience – we couldn’t ask to be involved with more motivated and inspiring people.

Being a working mum isn’t easy!

Maria is an incredible facilitator, trainer, public speaker and, of course, mum to her son, Lucas, and step mum to Tom, Liam, and Georgia. With all the hard work she puts in balancing work and home life, it’s no wonder she was invited to contribute to “Working Mums – Stories by real women on how they manage children, work and life”.
This incredible book takes you through people’s real-life experiences, struggles and ultimately successes in being a working mum, all with the aim to support the growing population of women who choose to don the red cape and begin the perpetual juggling act that is working and raising children.

With a huge range of influential Aussie mums jumping on board to share their stories, the book contains titbits from people such as musician Missy Higgins, radio host and comedian George McEncroe, and of course the lovely Maria Smith, Founder and CEO of Bounce!

If you’re a working mum or are about to become one, then you can go past the newly released “Working Mums” book! Inspired by the struggles and hilarity that working mum’s face on a daily basis in Australia, the book contains real stories and experiences from women just like you.

“Working Mums is a must-read for every mother. Filled with inspirational stories of amazing women who share the reality of the beauty and challenges of combining motherhood and work.” – Peace Mitchell, AusMumpreneur and The Women’s Business School

If you’d like to know more about the Working Mums Book and maybe even purchase a copy for yourself, you can head to www.workingmumsstories.com or www.finch.com.au/books/working-mums

Trainer of the Month

This month we’re featuring a very special trainer. Not only is she a career counsellor, offender employment specialist and certified professional resume writer, she is also our very first American Bounce trainer to be featured in the newsletter! So today, we proudly introduce the amazing Cheryl Kelly!

Cheryl has been with Bounce USA since its beginning in 2014 and has been supporting job seekers in achieving their goals ever since! Using her experience, skills and knowledge, Cheryl works with clients of all ages and backgrounds ranging from participants in Transitional Assistance Programs, low-income youth and adults as well as dislocated job seekers and ex-offenders re-entering the workforce.

Cheryl is no stranger to Workforce Development having spent the past 21 years as a career counsellor and case manager which has taught her the importance of assisting individuals in their transition into the workforce leading to self-sufficiency. Before that, she was a legal assistant for ten years concentrating on working with court-appointed attorneys and their clients.

Maria and Nettie had the privilege of popping into one of Cheryl’s programs during their last visit. It was only 2 hours into day 1 and participants were already sharing stories, laughing with each other and making new connections. There’s no mistaking Cheryl’s passion for supporting others in times of transition; it shows in her compassionate delivery and the faces of her participants.

Thank you, Cheryl, for your dedication to your participants and your never-ending passion for delivering Bounce. You’re a star!

Working with CatholicCare NT

Working with CatholicCare NT

There’s no doubt about it, Maria’s an incredible facilitator, which is why she is in such high demand! It’s lucky we have a great calendar system here at Bounce, or we’d never know where Maria was off to next! Last month Maria delivered a Goal Setting workshop to a group of fantastic people from CatholicCare NT in Alice Springs! The workshop focused on communication, supporting job seeker goals and writing effective job plans.
“Maria’s training was fantastic and our team walked away with a lot of practical skills and engagement techniques that we have already started to apply in the workplace. The lessons learned from the day will be so valuable in helping our staff see beyond just the requirements of the computer and legislation and into building genuine rapport with our clients. The GROW method is already helping us to develop more realistic and relatable goals with our clients.” – Dylan McKinley, Regional Manager CatholicCare NT – South East Alice Springs
CatholicCare NT is a not-for-profit organisation, providing counselling services and programs to individuals, couples, families, children groups, schools and agencies across the Northern Territory. Their mission is to contribute to a society that values all its members by strengthening individuals, families and communities in ways that respect their dignity and culture. They’re doing some amazing work, so check them out by clicking HERE.

Gamifying Employment

While wandering around the internet, getting myself up to date on the latest Employment Services news, an article caught my eye, ‘Tomorrow Me – Young Workers Gamification Project’ – Gaming and Employment? Awesome!
This brilliant initiative is a team up between VicHealth, Creative Victoria, game design agency Millipede, Education Services Australia and Foundation for Young Australians. The aim is to use “gamification” to push youth forward into sustainable employment. Just like your phone counts your steps and rewards you when you hit your goal, the new ‘Tomorrow Me’ app looks to be heading in the same direction with reward-based tasks.
While there doesn’t appear to be a launch date as yet for the exciting new employment-based game, planning seems to be well and truly underway, and I for one can’t wait to see the end result!
For more information on the ‘Tomorrow Me – Young Workers Gamification Project’ head to the Vic Health Website or CLICK HERE.

Trainer of the Month

Our trainer of the month for June is someone who has been with Bounce for just over six months. Kind-hearted, resilient and positive, Judy Jefferies is an unstoppable force of amazing!
Before joining Bounce, Judy was training in the corporate world for an incredible 22 years but decided a shakeup was needed. She stepped out, got her qualifications and joined Bounce soon after (yay!). Judy says that getting her trainer qualifications was the best thing she’s done, and to be accepted by Bounce was just ‘the icing on the cake’.
Judy is compassionate, caring and amazing to chat with. She gets incredible employment outcomes with job seekers and the site she delivers to love her so much they have booked her back to back!
‘I feel so privileged that each day I can help change the lives of people and impart some guidance and support to improve their mindset and take them forward in their life pathways.’
Thank you, Judy, for everything you do for the job seekers, the sites and the team here at Bounce. You’re a rock star!

Bounce goes Remote… Again!

Bounce goes Remote… Again!

Bounce trainers have been busy once again with NESA, delivering the Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS). RSAS is a government funded initiative that aims to boost the attendance rates in remote areas of Australia by educating providers and locals on new ways to motivate students to attend school.

This is Bounce’s 3rd year running with RSAS, delivering local forums, Leadership forums and Train the Trainer sessions across Australia. So far the Bounce team have delivered training in Yuendumu, NT, Boggabilla, NSW, Perth, WA and Maria is off to Derby, WA later this month. Bounce has been scheduled in for eight more trainings as well, that will span the rest of the year.

RSAS is an incredible initiative that’s making massive improvements in remote communities, and we are so grateful to be a part of it. If you’d like to find out more about the Remote Schools Attendance Strategy, click here!

The honour is all ours

We get invited to some truly incredible events here at Bounce, and we love every single one of them, but there was one particular event this year that took our breath away. Maria was honoured to be invited to speak at the 2018 Women Economic Forum, in India, and even walked away with an Exceptional Women of Excellence Award.

The annual event aims to bring together women from all over the globe to share ideas, build new connections and discuss innovative ways to support women in business. This incredible networking opportunity for women hosted a massively diverse group of people from all around the world and focused on interactive workshops and talks supporting business equality.

Maria returned from her trip practically glowing with pride and excitement, unable to hold in her brilliant stories from the event. Thank you to everyone who organised this inspired forum!

Trainer of the Month

A lot of the time, we go out and search for very special Bounce trainers, but then, in strange twists of fate, our Bounce trainers find us. In the case of the beautiful Noula Petrarca, this is exactly what happened.

‘It’s almost 12 months to the day that I met a Bounce Trainer who changed my life on a holiday in Bali. She said “You have to be a Bounce Trainer you have that X factor” and I learned very quickly that when someone believes in you, believing in yourself is eventually a given! As a Bounce trainer, I now take this into my training room, I make a difference every day to someone’s life, and I love it. I believe in me.’

Having worked in the fitness industry for 20 years, and also having been an extremely successful bodybuilder, Noula quickly learnt discipline, self-confidence, patience and integrity. Once her three children grew up, she decided it was time for a change, and that’s when Noula met Abby, a Bounce trainer who also happened to be holidaying in Bali. The rest is history.

Noula is an incredible human being. She takes her role to inspire and motivate very seriously, and her caring and passionate nature shines through every day. Starting in September last year, Noula has already changed the lives of so many of her participants. Thank you for your determination, Noula, what would we do without it!

Tip of the Month

“Support the people around you. When someone is having a difficult time at work, it can show up in many different ways; irritability may actually be stress or confusion, so take the time to ask. Kindness and understanding goes a long way.”

Where’s your Integrity?

Integrity. It’s a word that’s thrown around a lot, employers want it, employees need it, and training companies talk it up, but no one ever actually discusses what it is. In short, integrity is being your word, doing the things that you said or implied that you would do, whether that’s completing a huge project or helping a friend move house.

So where is your integrity? Find Out

Tip of the Month

“Do you say things to yourself like “Well it’s not going to work so I won’t put too much effort in” or “There’s no point doing that job”? Re-framing your beliefs and how you perceive things can help you start to feel good and flourish.”

Breaking the mould with The Life Changer Foundation

Breaking the mould with The Life Changer Foundation

This month we’re not sending you our normal newsletter. Instead, we’re sending you a personal message. A message about something very close to our hearts and something that Founder and CEO, Maria is intensely passionate about; so passionate that last week she walked 140km to raise money and awareness – It’s called The LifeChanger Foundation.

The LifeChanger Foundation is on an epic mission to turn these stats around and create a generational shift in society. LifeChanger believes that by providing young Australians with the tools to develop a positive self-identity, they will be empowered to live their best life.

The LifeChanger program develops an adolescent’s self-identity by nurturing the individual across five key pillars; Wellbeing, Life-Skills, Self-Awareness, Purpose & Meaning and Connections.

This revolutionary approach will give every young Australian unprecedented access to programs within their community and a first-of-its-kind digital platform providing a pathway to their best life. Moreover, the digital platform and community engagement will mean ongoing, responsive support.

As well as Maria, LifeChanger already has over 14 Ambassadors, including names like World Champion Surfer, Layne Beachley, Australian Netballer, Shae Brown, Ironman, Trevor Hendy and so many more backing the foundation.

Small steps, Big Journey – Marias 140km trek to raise awareness

Last week, Maria embarked on a 140km trek through Western Australia to raise money and awareness for the LifeChanger Foundation. On top of walking through sand dunes, camping out under the stars and discovering how uncomfortable hiking boots are, Maria explained to us her experience of taking the first step off a 52 foot cliff. For Maria, this was putting her teachings into practice and testing the boundaries of what your mind and body will let you get away with… and it had us in stitches.

Abseiling is not something Maria had ever done before or necessarily ever wanted to do, but as she watched each member of her trek team lazily roll back over the edge of the mammoth cliff and bounce their way down a 52 foot drop like it was just another Friday afternoon, Maria couldn’t not give it a go!

And here’s where we begin to run the gauntlet of emotions.

Maria Smiths Guide to Emotional Abseiling

Step 1: Fear.

Become so scared that you question your instructor’s ability and sanity – “What do you mean put my hand behind me?! Where behind me!? It doesn’t make sense!”

Step 2: Anger.

Out of pure unadulterated fear, once again question your instructor’s capabilities but this time be less polite about it – “I’ve never done this! You need to check all my belts again!”

Step 3: Denial.

Express your pure terror by exploding into tears, shaking and flat out refusing to move while your instructor calmly tells you that you’re perfectly safe and you’re going to do a great job – “No! Nope. I’m not doing it. You can’t make me do it!”

Step 4: Regret.

Allow your body to go numb from fear exhaustion and slowly back your feet over the edge of the cliff… then immediately look down. This is the feeling of regret – the biggest regret you have ever had.

Step 5: Bargaining.

Now that you’re over the edge of this stupid cliff that you have stupidly decided to stupidly fall down, attempt to follow the words of the instructor by laying back and straightening your legs while simultaneously attempting to hug the wall with every available body part. Realise that this is a physical impossibility and resort praying to any higher power that will listen, not to let you plummet to your death.

Step 6: Shock.

While still frozen solid, dangling from what now seems like a piece of rope constructed purely of heavily abused dental floss, finally calm down enough to hear every single person in your trek team cheering you on with claps and ‘woots’ – well, sh*t. You’re actually doing it… and you’re not dead!

Step 7: Acceptance.

Realise that you’re completely nailing this whole thing and start slinking your way downwards like some weird Cat Woman/Spiderman hybrid, taking in the absolute beauty of the whole situation and feeling an overwhelming sense of peace.

Step 8: Exhilaration.

Finally, let your feet touch the ground with the consistency of mash potato stuffed into water balloons, laughing and weeping uncontrollably until the trek guide hugs you to stop you shaking like you’ve just been electrocuted. You did it! You ran the gauntlet of emotions, overcoming your terror and showing yourself that you are capable of much more than you know.

Even though Maria has returned safe and sound from this incredible adventure, she could still use your help to raise funds towards this ground-breaking initiative.

Every cent raised goes directly towards getting the LifeChanger programs out to youth all over the country, giving them the opportunity to develop their wellbeing, life-skills, self-awareness, purpose, meaning and connections. Donations are tax-deductible, so there is nothing to lose!

Help our kids get the chance they deserve – just 1 dollar, and you can change someone’s whole world.
